UPDATE MySongs V4.0.1 (patch)

A patch has just been released for the latest version that introduced support for Google Drive backup (V4.0). This patch is a stab at fixing a mysterious bug that occurs (on both versions) when displaying some song layouts. It also fixes some minor keyboard issues on the paid version. - Mayeo

UPDATE 4.0 released

Update 4.0 introduces support for Google Drive to backup and sync your songs across devices. This can be found in the menu on the main screen. (the newly added "Drive" button). The update also adds some grease to the gears, with a fairly big size reduction (roughly 80% smaller) and better memory usage. More to follow... - Mayeo

UPDATE MySongs Version 3.0

MySongs has been updated to version 3.0 EDIT 18 May 2014: Free version now updated to v3.0 as well. New in this update is the ability to save and load multiple playlists. Just make your list, and tap the "Load/Save" button from the menu. Add a name and save it. You can update a list by typing the name in again and it will overwrite. Select a song from the spinner and tap "Load" to load it. Simples! The major feature in this update is the (BETA) ability to display chords and lyrics at the same time. It does require a little bit of tinkering to get the display just right. Just keep adding blank lines to the lyrics/chords to get the fit just right. It takes any section titles out of the lyrics, and tries to get rid of any extra empty lines. There is a bit more work to perfect it, but I think it's good enough for some real world testing. There are also some behind the scenes changes, just improving memory usage and the like Test it out and let me know an...

The future

It has been a while since any updates/progress on the app. But I'm still working, in between college work. Firstly, I've been working on the ability to save different playlists, with names. Really only beneficial on the full paid version, when you've got 60 songs and a few different playlists. Next up there's the holy grail: chords AND lyrics on the same screen. You know the way you generally see chord sheets, with the chords on a line above the lyrics? Have that pretty much nailed. There is a little bit of tinkering to be done by you, the user. Just add a couple empty lines at the start of the lyrics to make it line up with the chords. When it works, it works beautifully. When it doesn't quite work, you still get the gist of it. Just have to add a check to see if there are lyrics AND chords for the song. If the mode is selected and both are there, then display both. Otherwise we just display whatever you have for the song. Pretty major update, that last one....

UPDATE MySongs Version 2.4.1

Just a minor fix in this update, mostly relating to small screen devices (phones really). Using the "Transpose" function may have proven quite difficult, it was sorta squashed in on top of itself making it impossible to change the options. The box has been resized, and tested so should be OK on most devices now! Next major update will include prompts to save when exiting Add/Edit Song, and a beginning at combining lyrics and chords in one screen! - Eoin

UPDATE MySongs Version 2.4

MySongs version 2.4 is now available on both versions. This update simply includes a new BETA feature being tested: transposition. Forgot a capo? Or need to change the key? Use this tool. Available for each song individually on the "Display Song" screen. Current implementation (ie. the pop-up) is just temporary for the proof of concept, better integration will be integrated in future versions. The feature is BETA, meaning I've tested it a bit and it more or less works to my own needs, but I need some more help. Sometimes there may be undesirable results, but rarely should this crash the app and it definitely WILL NOT affect the original songs on the database. If you find any problems, or have any suggestions about the feature, please contact me using the 'Contact/Support' button in the app. More about the thought process, and future developments on this aspect can be found here . Please test and let me know how it works for you. As long as you've g...

Transposing

I've been making different types of music apps ever since I first learned JavaScript all those years ago. Chords, scales, and more. One thing I always struggled with was transposing though. It's difficult enough, there are so many different scales: Major, minor, chromatic, pentatonic to name a few. My music theory is good, but when it comes to transposing, there's a lot more to be learned. Then things come into play like transposing up or down. General rule of thumb for me is transposing up sharpens, transposing down flattens. Then that throws a few (potential) problems in. Some chords have two names (A#/Bb for example). Personally, I never use an 'A#' chord, it's always called 'Bb' to me. So do I take that into account in the transposing, or do I just leave it as 'A#' if it's up, or 'Bb' if it's down? Much ado about nothing, in reality. Just some perfectionism shining through. For the app, I've sort of generalised the...

UPDATE MySongs Version 2.3.2

New update now available. This update just fixes some issues with the keyboards. The issue with the keyboards covering the bottom of the chords/lyrics fields while adding or editing a song has been resolved. The custom keyboard now appears at the bottom of the screen, just scroll down to access all the keys. The system keyboard (standard keyboard for text etc.) still covers the fields, but you can now scroll the screen to see all of the field. The custom keyboard has also had some minor changes to its layout and sizing. Most notable is the removal of the "CLR" button and the rearranging of the keys in that area. Text size has also been changed. There is still a problem with the text size of the keys in the popup menu on small screen devices, but the keys should still work. The final change is specifically for the paid version, the song display limit has been increased from 10 to 20 songs. - Eoin

UPDATE MySongs Version 2.3

Version 2.3 (FREE and paid) is now available and contains a massive amount of bug-fixes, the app has been thoroughly fumigated. New in this version: New custom keyboard layout, now available across all devices. For new installs, a sample song is included in the database by default. This serves as an example in formatting your own songs, and lets you see how the app works from the start. Changes to the time signature and swing rhythm images (now solid black/white and better sizes). This will also enable the images to use the custom colour in a future version. A rainforest-full of bugs have been fixed. Mostly to do with the apps handling of an empty database, but also include using the Load/Save feature after deleting songs and saving songs with no title (not allowed ;) ) With this version, there are also a small few known bugs which should be fixed in a future version. Slight error in displaying keyboards on large screen devices; they cover the bottom of the Chords and Ly...

MySongs Update 2.3

It seems every time I update this, I find more problems. Not new problems, just ones that were there since the start but I hadn't noticed. For instance, there has been a bug that causes the app to crash if there are no songs in the database and you press "Create Playlist".  I never noticed it, as any time I made new changes, there were always songs there, but it more than likely has been driving a considerable amount of new users away. First thing you do when you download an app is test it out, it doesn't work you get rid of it. So next update will include a song in the database from the start for new installs. This won't affect any current users, it only happens if the database does not exist. So all your songs are safe :) Next up is a minor GUI change, first the time signatures and swing rhythm images are updated, now solid black or solid white depending on theme. Secondly the custom keyboard has been updated, now works on all screen sizes (but with some ...

UPDATE MySongs Version 2.2

Version 2.2 (free and paid) has just been released. I don't really have a road-map for the development of the My Songs app, just get ideas now and then for things to add. Included in this version is better display support for lyrics, they are now displayed in a similar way to the chords. A settings menu has been added, this allows for switching between lyrics and chords, dark and light themes, and allows user selection of a custom colour which is used throughout the app. Also included are minor bug fixes and graphics adjustments. Enjoy!
